Blitzkrieg Projects - Random Map Mod

What is this mod all about ?

The game Blitzkrieg takes the player through three historical campaigns. Each campaign is divided into chapters. To "advance" from one chapter to the next one must succesfully complete a historical mission. Before this mission becomes available one has to succesfully complete at least one random mission.

Core units

Blitzkrieg has something called core units. These core units differ from other units in that they follow you through each historical campaign. The core units also gain experience and can be upgraded to better prototypes than other units. Therefore they are more "valuable". To upgrade the core units and to improve their "skills" one needs to play more than the historical missions. This is where random maps (random missions) come in.

So why make this mod ?

The original random maps were in many players opinion small and had little variation. A new problem also arose in these small maps when gameplay mods that increased range of many weapons became more and more popular. The "Solvang" Random Map Mod (previously also known as "BOFH's Mod") introduces new random maps to the original Blitzkrieg campaigns. The new maps are larger than the original ones, leaving much more room for "manouvering" and provides missions that work better with "long-range" mods. The Random Map Mod is divided into three parts, one for each of the original campaigns.
In addition to random maps, the third part also features an entire new chapter in the Allied campaign.
Use the menu on the left to see more details about the three separate parts.

A short history

My work on the Random Map Mod started in 2005. After playing all the three original campaigns in Blitzkrieg,
I downloaded several mods and tweaks for the game. There is a lot available. I played it some more but still found that the game had too little variation for my taste.
I started experimenting with and digging into the original files and realized that making brand new random maps couldn't be that hard. Spurred on by Olmsted's mod and the Road To Victory mod I started to add new random maps to the German campaign.
It wasn't hard to clearly see the structure of Blitzkrieg and the random maps since almost everything is based on XML. But actually getting the map editor to create new random maps turned out to be a really tough challenge. Had I known from the start all the problems I would run into, this mod would probably never have been finished.

Project status

All campaigns have now been finished and released.
You can download them below and they will probably soon be available for download at the Blitzkrieg Headquarters as well.

What do other people say about the mod ?

One of the biggest reasons to continue the work on this mod was all the feedback I got from people who tried it. I have taken the liberty of quoting some of them here. If you have been quoted below and do not wish to be so please notify me immediately and I will remove your statement.
The name BOFH is my user name on these boards. The real BOFH actually has a story. Or several stories. You can read all about them here.

BOFH,
I have always enjoyed playing your "Solvang Random Mod" for the Germans.
I am constantly changing units from other add-ons and mods( just for myself) and adding them to the Olmsted mod.
It makes the game even more fun to play.
And with the size of your maps and fantastic missions, it turns BK into a really great game.
I have waited a very long time for part 2 of the "Solvang Random Mission Mod", and I donīt mind waiting a bit longer.
I am truly looking forward to the new Russian Campaign.
Regards

I am just making my way through the first German random mod and I would like to say that it is GREAT!.
Huge maps, many objectives, detailed map design, and most of all epic battles and some severe difficulty killing multitudes of russian tanks.
Really looking forward to the Russian and Allied random mods as well, Keep up the great work, it is much appreciated.

All very good, the "deplete deployement" missions and the "defend the city" are extremely good...

BOFH, I just have to say great job on your mod. I almost made it through the German campaign with your mod and mine, but had to reformat my comp. I am working on the Russian one, and it still works great with my mod. Thanks for enhancing my gaming experience. My newest version of the mod will be out as soon as I can get some realistic allied reload times and finally remember to give heavy mgs more ammo.

"Well, I just installed the mod (new missions shared with old ones), played a couple of missions in France and I can tell you it's the MOD (with Olmsted and RTV mods) that ALL the community was waiting for. You guys simply rock I never played German campaign further than Moscow (V chapter) so for me it's a total new challenge. But I have little time to read the forums (I am a student with plenty of work actually) so I read something about CTD and bugs but I am not sure about it. So perhaps I'm going to wait until the mod is tested by the other players. I don't like to start a new campaign and hit on a CTD when having my core units at elite level. Cheers and Thanks for a really really GREAT work."

Posted by Kalath 20-03-2005, 03:34 PM

"RTV, Olmsted and yours are the only mods I have installed in my computer. OK then I'm going on today night or next weekend. And again, for the creators of RTV, Olmsted and you: You are keeping this game at the highest and helping me to keep myself studying until 3:00 on the morning, every time I need some refresh I go to play another map. "

"We're really going to have to start a new "Best Mod" ever poll or thread as so much good stuff has been coming out lately. And cheers to BOFH. Just downloaded his Random map mod and guess that Im going to have to take a few sick days to play it through. A bad time to give up the cigarettes!"

Posted by Kram 07-04-2005, 04:04 PM

"It IS challenging but thats not a bad thing at all. And it seems to have surprises too. Still on th efrench ones but looking forward to the Eastern Front missions. And big maps are great! I used to click through random missions to get to the better historical ones but not anymore. "

Posted by Kram 11-04-2005, 07:42 AM

"Was playing my first "Take the Industrial Area" random map last night and these kick a*s. Took me as long as most historical maps! And it seemed to have scripting! If Haglesturm maps were the "Historical maps" and these ones were the random maps, and Olmsteds mod and RtV realism mod was included with some of the new skins then that would be the ultimate Blitzkrieg."

Posted by 76CJ5 18-04-2005, 05:06 PM

"Outstanding job with your mod...You really put the fun back in the game...The extra missions are way to fun and challenging with no slowdowns or ctd's...Thank you"

Posted by Oskar 21-04-2005, 12:28 AM

"Ahh, awesome BOFH. Currently playing the russian campaign with Real Life MOD (long range mod) and your skins. At some maps, combat starts instantly and I loose a couple of tanks (among some core tanks). So some bigger maps wouldnt hurt =)" Good job BOFH. Keep it up !

Posted by Kram 25-04-2005, 07:54 AM

"Sweeeet! I cant wait to see the dam mission! "

Posted by Kalath 13-05-2005, 07:07 PM

"Playing the Kharkov historical map now, not a single CTD in my German campaign and I've played probably all the new missions of your mod until now. I had a bad time with the headquarters mission all the time I was shooted by some artillery in the town but finally I got it it was railway-transported artillery I counted 77 Soviet tanks destroyed Really really good missions "

Posted by Belgarion 15-05-2005, 10:07 PM

"Great job BOFH!!! This sounds like a great addition to the Blitzkrieg gaming community and can't wait to see some of the new missions for USSR and then ALLIES."
